余之于旧诗，宁敢自拟于尧咨之射与翁之酌油哉。锲而不舍，垂七十载，尚难言熟，以译西诗，时虞殒越。倘改习新体，即成生手。操觚试作，必落下乘，又讵能用以译西方词人之佳什乎？余之以旧体译西诗，原出于译诗体裁。似可不拘一格之私见，是以古今杂陈，各言俱备。多年以来，既常邀不期之誉，亦屡召泥古之讥。爰于兹集首篇，赘以后记，率陈敝意。非敢解嘲，旨在求正。博雅君子，幸垂教焉。
